Boys and Girls Club of Wales Event at Rhondda Heritage Park 21 August 2015 at 11am
TOWER COLLIERY, 50 PIECES OF SILVER
Exhibition of photographs from Tower Colliery by artist Eleanor Whiteman.
Tower Colliery is the only mine in the history of British Coal to have been bought by its workforce.
It is unique. As the last deep mine in Wales, its closure in 2008 marked the end of an era woven with hardship, oppression and tragedy.
Despite this, the spirit of the Tower miners could not be broken and their story is ultimately about the strength of community spirit.
The space that remains is heavy with metaphor and the ‘still lifes’ within it have taken on an abstract narrative of their own.
The President of The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs of Wales, Tyrone O’Sullivan, was one of the miners who bought Tower Colliery and he has agreed to come and talk to our young people about his time at the colliery which will be a very interesting and inspiring experience.
Therefore I would like to invite a group of young people to attend the event at the Heritage Park on the 21st of August at 11 am. There’s no age limit and parents are also welcome. You could make a day of it as there are many things to see and do at the park.
This event has been organised by Cathryn Evans of BGC Wales
